Joe began road racing in 2004 looking for a new challenge in sports after many years as an elite runner, which ended in injury following a 4th place finish in the 1999 Crestar Richmond Marathon. Unable to continue running, Joe focused on both his racing career and providing for his wife Melinda while she completed medical school at East Carolina University in Greenville, NC.

Joe and Melinda decided to join the East Carolina Velo club for some guidance while training for their first triathlon together in 2004 for "something to do." The first club ride led to a chance meeting with club member Dr. Tim Gavin. At the time Dr. Gavin was coaching pro rider Justin England (Toyota United), who had also been a serious runner before switching to cycling full-time. As Dr. Gavin explained the intricacies of racing at the elite level, Joe’s interest in cycling developed.

Joe began racing on the road with the EC Velo race team in the summer of 2004. He enlisted the help of USCF Cat 1 rider/coach Mark Legg to help take his riding to the next level. By the summer of 2006 Joe’s passion for the sport was clear as he switched to riding full-time. In July, 2006, he won the Newton’s Revenge-Mt. Washington Hill climb. In addition to his duties on the board of the Capri Foundation and as the team’s director look for Joe to join the team on the road this season.
